It is with regret that the Brewster Volunteer Fire Department learned of the passing of Patty Duffy. Patty was one of James Duffy's daughters. James was Chief of the Brewster Fire Department from 1968 to 1969. James Duffy was also a longstanding Commissioner of The Brewster Southeast Joint Fire District who served in that role from 1972 to 2003. He successfully minimized fire tax increases as well as assuring the Town of Southeast was equipped with superior fire equipment. The Fire District was formed because of the greatly expanding needs of the Town of Southeast. Population and business dramatically increased the need for an improved emergency response. The construction of Interstate highways I 84 and I 684 also significantly increased both traffic and population. James' wife Mary Jane was a Charter member of the Brewster Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary.
One of his sons, James was a member of the Brewster Fire Department for 8 years and another son Kevin was a member for a short time. Patty was a member who helped shatter the male chauvinist fire department world. It was always enjoyable sight to see her expertly drive the Rescue truck to an accident scene. It was satisfying to see other department's eyes pop open when they saw a female driving a fire truck, especially a large Rescue vehicle. Mouths would open up and catch flies when she competently operated equipment. Males were astonished on how capable she was when using the heavy rescue equipment.
May she rest in peace.
Note: The author has been a member of the Brewster Fire Department since February 1976.
